The Orpheus Institute - Guiding Principles
FIRST DO NO HARM Life is beautiful. Life is precious. Life is sacred. Life is fragile.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES Our Core Values We are governed by fundamental values that define what we feel is effective philanthropy. Honesty In all relationships and in all work: our actions are free of any external influence and political, religious, philosophical or scientific objectives that would thwart our mission. We will always remain true to ourselves, our principles and our values. Members of the team attach great importance to effective communication. We strive to maintain transparency in our objectives, decisions and challenges. Honesty is essential to improve and maintain the mutual trust necessary to achieve success. Integrity Integrity has always been at the heart of our commitment. It determines our behavior and inspires us to make the proper choices for TOI’s long-term success. We believe in honesty, confidentiality, trust, respect and transparency - and these beliefs are reflected in our personal, organizational and commercial relations. We adapt to new challenges where needed, adhere to our principles, treat others as we would like to be treated and direct our efforts toward the collective good. Justice for all, without bias or prejudice Benevolence Compassion for others. Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Empathy and compassion are fundamental to achieve the acceptance of others. Transparency and Accountability They are key to earning the confidence of the public. The team considers timely, honest feedback to measure its performance. Pioneering Encouraging creativity, ideas and innovation. We believe in taking risks: we cannot be afraid to fail if we want to achieve our goals. Collaboration We work together and pool our knowledge to help patients and other professionals achieve objectives. Team members work together as partners to achieve mutual positive outcomes Service We feel that all humanity wishes to contribute to the well-being of others. Helping others helps us better understand ourselves as it demands self-awareness, compassion and empathy. Being of service is a mainstay of our organizational culture. Excellence We aim for excellence in all we do: we are continuously reassessing and make changes where necessary. We take the long-term view in our decisions as we know they will have an impact on generations to come. Perseverance Determination in overcoming obstacles.
OUR FOUNDING PRINCIPLES First do no harm Life is beautiful. Life is precious. Life is sacred. Life is fragile. Respect the lives of others. Make them respect yours Life cannot be contained... You must not let others entrap you either. — Eliane Fontaine Respect the individual's own pace The Orpheus Institute uses resources that respect the evolution of the patient. Thus, CAP, our psycho-emotional therapy using art as a mediation, allows patients to progress at their own pace in complete safety. Working together The patient must be actively involved in the healing process. H/She must be active. "…The physician is the servant of the art. The patient must cooperate with the physician in combatting the disease." — Hippocrates Life is movement – The human being is a traveler Go with the Flow of Life Guess the riddle "Guess the riddle or I will devour you, the famous line spoken by the Sphinx. Culture of Discernment. We are devoured by what we don't understand." — Eliane Fontaine Transformation & the ability to surpass oneself Humans have adaptation mechanisms, which allow them to be in harmony with their environment. These mechanisms, or instincts, include inborn, primitive reactions that we are not generally aware of. Some individuals become so unsettled that they are unfit for the journey. But humans have the capacity to change some of their primary behaviors. That’s where the process of evolution starts: automatic reactions slowly disappear and are replaced by controlled behaviors that are adapted to the circumstances. We believe in the creative power of the individual and their ability to transform themselves. To do this, they must first know themselves, understand themselves and others. Know Thyself - And you will know the Universe and the Gods This is a motto inscribed on the frontispiece of the Temple of Delphi (Greece). Collaborative work Our extensive clinical experience in supporting hundreds of professionals ranging from small, private, psychotherapeutic medical practices to large healthcare institutions (psychiatric clinics, hospitals, retirement homes, rehabilitation centers) - all pioneers in the field of art and music therapy — has demonstrated the usefulness of a multidisciplinary approach. Creative conflict & Traveling together We believe in creative conflict. "The attitude that conflict is often harmful is only a part of the story. This partial and limiting belief sets us up to miss powerful opportunities to take advantage of the creative forces of conflict. To reap the fullest benefits from conflict, we must change how we think about it. " — Jagoda Perich-Anderson Dedication Our passion and commitment to study the effects of the music grew with the years, supported by remarkable psychiatrists who brought honor to their profession by their dedication and resourcefulness in introducing music as a viable therapy. We believe in vocation, commitment, self-giving.
CONVICTION & BELIEFS Music is Medicine We believe in the transformative power of art, like the Greek who used the power of great classical drama to trigger catharsis. Sacred Medicine We believe that mechanistic medicine is very useful but it’s not enough because it approaches the human being in a fragmented way. Physicians should be trained in the art of healing the soul as well as repairing the body. Psychosomatic Medicine Psychosomatics (psyche: mind and soma: body) has been known since ancient Egypt to the Hebrews, Chinese, Hindus, Greeks and Arabs. Psychoanalysts then psychologists and homeopathy in the 19th century placed the mind with its emotions as the main source of pathologies and therefore as a healing space with the law of HERING: "Healing is obtained by treating and suppressing symptoms from top to bottom". "Without a doubt, rationalism has made a huge contribution to the advancement of medicine. Rationalism has not, however, developed techniques that go to the core of the problem. lt cannot cure chronic disease; rather, it treats symptoms of the disease, which often reappear as deeper and more insidious problems…" — Jane Cicchetti, Dreams, Symbols & Homeopathy Transmission We must do something for ourselves. We must do something for the people of the world. We believe in leaving a legacy for future generations – one that can help them change the world! Interdependence Interdependence – the connection of every individual to all other living beings - is the basis of the Orpheus Institute's worldview. We honor diversity, the contribution of each individual to the whole and the fullness of every human being: mind, body, heart and spirit.
