The Orpheus Isolated Elderly
Supporting Isolated Elderly
Sensory changes, cognitive changes, and weakness may plague people over the age 85. Loss of our social networks, our purpose in life, or our friends and contemporaries as we age may lead to isolation and lonliness. This emotional state can complicate disease or disorders. We offer a transformative and creative program of 13 online sessions of drawing and painting under a unique musical selection that helps your elderly loved one — parents, spouse, bother, sister or friend— to receive proper, attentive and respectful mental health care that maintains their dignity and autonomy. Each session allows them to enjoy their life and to be engaged. Our experience demonstrates [see here] that older adults who are suffering from Alzheimer disease, depression, feeling isolated, or coping with grief and loss benefit deeply from the CAP program. How CAP Benefits Older Adults CAP is a supportive, safe and secure psycho-emotional therapy that helps with many of the changes we encounter as we grow older. The programmed sessions help to gently identify the underlying emotions associated with either the psychological or physical conditions that occur with aging. CAP does not replace but complements medical care. It is an artistic mediated method that is a highly structured process for those who have difficulty expressing themselves. CAP offers another language for communication — the symbolic language of drawing, color, and shapes —that effectively mobilizes the individual’s inner potential while reducing stress and the negative effects of illness, dementia or depression. This process can help older adults express their pain and free them from buried or unspoken anguish. It helps them to welcome their inner wisdom despite any physical, behavioral or mental challenges they are experiencing. By participating in CAP it can help create a balanced and peaceful environment that is beneficial for the individual, their family, and caregivers. This innovative approach helps practitioners and caregivers connect to the human story within each older adult – a story filled with the many joys and hardships encountered through a lifetime that need to be recognized and acknowledged. CAP embraces - with respect and tenderness - the deep and sensitive layers of each being, and helps to develop an uncommon dialogue, and a beautiful therapeutic alliance between the person, their family, the healthcare team. Music and Drawing : An Approach for Human-Centered Elder Care By 2050, Americans 85 years and older will triple, highlighting the need for developing a culture of sensitivity to the needs of this population in clinical and public health settings. Sensory deficits, cognitive changes, and frailty may be subtle or severe in the population over 85. Beyond the challenges of chronic physical disease and the difficulty with activities of daily living the cognitive, psychological, social and environmental changes seen in this population is an important public health concern. Healthcare practitioners and systems are adapting to the growing needs of the older population with new skills and therapies that help address the effects of isolation and loneness that only compound poor physical and emotional health. CAP can help prevent or delay institutional care and allow older adults to receive care at home, realizing the benefits of more human-centered and and psychologically-effective care.
